My work as a wedding and gift florist brings me into contact with interesting people from all walks of life. No two floristry commissions are the same, but I can’t honestly say that I’m never asked the same question twice, because some questions crop up time and time again. One of the most popular, and one which I’d like to address here is: is it really a good idea to give flowers as a gift?
We all know flowers can make the perfect gift for almost any occasion, but as we’ve said so many times, blooms from the garage forecourt or local supermarket aren’t a patch on a well-thought-out arrangement hand-crafted by your local, independent florist.
It might seem clichéd, but Mums really do still love to receive flowers on Mother’s Day – or any other time of the year, if it comes to that. So, now that Mothering Sunday is nearly upon us, maybe it’s time – for the benefit of all the bewildered kids out there – to take a fresh look (see what we did there) at why Mums just love those beautiful blooms.
You can’t fail to have noticed that the great British summer has arrived in earnest. (And if you haven’t noticed, I hope it’s nice and cosy beneath that rock you must be living under!) But as you all head for the nearest park on your days off, and lounge majestically on garden chairs, it’s worth bearing us florists in mind, as we work to make your wedding flowers the best they can be, under surprisingly tough conditions.
It’s been a wild winter, and many parts of the country are still being battered by snow storms, but spring is just about here, so it’s time to enjoy the many beautiful plants that this season has to offer. It’s that time of year again… the card shops are awash with hearts and balloons, and on the 14th of this month we’re all supposed to show that “special someone” just how much we care, but without revealing our names. (As if they won’t recognise our handwriting!) Over-commercialised it may be, but it has to be said, there’s something inherently enjoyable about showing someone you care.
